Letter from Halil Savda from the prison, on the 23rd of March:
The system regards those who criticize militarism and those who support the ones that opposes militarism as a double threat when they are at the same time conscientious objectors. And it continues to punish them. All of these are vain attempts to silence our dissident character and make us feel the civil-death on our necks all through our lives. Why should it be a crime to say “don’t kill”?
I will continue to tell people “don’t go into military service” regardless of the state judging me and punishing me. Because I know conformist culture will exist as long as people continue to serve in the military. Because I know that without a critique of the army, demilitarization of the society is not possible. The fact that I am imprisoned will not break my will as a conscientious objector, as a human rights activist, as a writer and anti-war activist. I would continue to say “don’t kill” even if I was imprisoned for 10 years, not 100 days. Freedom and peace will triumph!

Halil Savda, a conscientious objector from Turkey and a columnist of the newspaper Özgür Politika was arrested for disinclining of military last week because he had protested the Israeli occupation in Lebanon and supported the conscientious objectors from Israel. Halil Savda had read a statement for press in front of the Israel Consulate in order to protest the attack in 2006. He was put on trial because he said “Don’t do military service” in this statement in order to support conscientious objectors Itzit Shabbat and Amir Paster from Israel. At the end of the trial he was sentenced to 5 months in prison and arrested in a hotel in Doğubeyazıt and put into jail.
Savda, who insists that the army and military are contrary to his conscientious and libertarian beliefs, had been arrested and put into prison many times previously and suffered severe torture both under arrest and in prison.
Savda has sent a message form prison: “I am in prison because I have protested Israeli occupation in Lebanon and supported the conscientious objection of Israeli soldiers. There wasn’t anything against Turkey in my statement. Our declaration in front of the Israel Consulate being found guilty is a sign that Prime Minister Erdoğan’s rhetorical mobilisation against Israel is not very sincere.” Savda doesn’t compromise despite the severe conditions in prison.

We received news from Eda Ederner, Hali`s partner, who visited him on 20 March 2012. She said:
“Diyadin prison is more comfortable; every week we can see each other without barriers between us. I brought him blankets and sweets. The jail provided him with three newspapers. So he reads three daily newspapers every day. He is with two other political prisoners in a room, there is heating and there is a tv in the room. So he is very calm now. He could not get previous cards and letters, but now he can receive.correspondence. So he is waiting for letters and cards.” Please write to Halil. Every letter and card is important to let him know - and the prison authorities - that he has international support, that the world is watching.

Παραθέτουμε μήνυμα που του τουρκικού κινήματος BDS που είχε κυκλοφορήσει πριν ένα μήνα.

Ο Χαλίλ Σαβντά, αντιρρησίας συνείδησης από την Τουρκία και αρθρογράφος στην εφημερίδα Özgür Politika συνελήφθη για αποτροπή από το στρατό, την περασμένη εβδομάδα επειδή είχε διαμαρτυρηθεί για την ισραηλινή κατοχή στο Λίβανο και είχε υποστηρίξει τους αντιρρησίες συνείδησης από το Ισραήλ. Ο Χαλίλ Σαβντά είχε διαβάσει μια δήλωση στον τύπο, μπροστά στο Ισραηλινό Προξενείο, για να διαμαρτυρηθεί για την επίθεση του 2006. Παραπέμφθηκε σε δίκη επειδή είχε πει, «μην κάνετε στρατιωτική θητεία», στη δήλωσή του για να υποστηρίξει τους αντιρρησίες συνείδησης Itzit Shabbat και Amir Paster από το Ισραήλ. Στο τέλος της δίκης καταδικάστηκε σε 5 μήνες φυλάκιση και συνελήφθη σε ένα ξενοδοχείο στο Doğubeyazıt και τον έβαλαν φυλακή.
Ο Σαβντά, που επιμένει ότι ο στρατός είναι ενάντια στα συνειδησιακά και ελευθεριακά του πιστεύω, είχε συλληφθεί και τεθεί στη φυλακή πολλές φορές στο παρελθόν και είχε υποστεί σοβαρά βασανιστήρια τόσο κατά τη σύλληψη όσο και στη φυλακή.
Ο Σαβντά έχει στείλει ένα μήνυμα από τη φυλακή: «Είμαι στη φυλακή επειδή έχω διαμαρτυρηθεί για την ισραηλινή κατοχή στο Λίβανο και έχω υποστηρίξει την αντίρρηση συνείδησης Ισραηλινών στρατιωτών. Δεν υπήρχε τίποτα εναντίον της Τουρκίας στη δήλωσή μου. Το ότι η διακήρυξή μας μπροστά στο Ισραηλινό Προξενείο, κρίθηκε ένοχη, είναι σημάδι ότι η ρητορική κινητοποίηση του Πρωθυπουργού Ερντογάν εναντίον του Ισραήλ δεν είναι και πολύ ειλικρινής».
Ο Σαβντά δεν συμβιβάζεται παρά τις πολύ άσχημες συνθήκες στη φυλακή.
