Compulsory Military Service

Compulsory Military Service

The hateful voice of the commander
Permeates the building,
As the fear of the unexpected
Permeates one’s thoughts.

‘Cause for a man who counts every hour away,
Extra hours –
Unplanned for;
Unaccounted for;
Are killing.

Always that way.
Always the same – insufferable – emotions.
Threatened
From the moment he passes the gate
To the moment he leaves.

He cannot get out.
He cannot get out.
As the commander almost chokes in his shrill shouting,
Somebody, nearby,
Is passing the worst days of his life.

Choking.
